SERVANTS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY (S.B.V.M.) SISTERS

Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary is Local Congregation which is founded in the Southern Part of Malawi in the Archdiocese of Blantyre.  It is at Nguludi in Chiradzulu District.

FOUNDER OF SERVANTS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Bishop Louis Auneau was the founder of this Congregation.  He was born on 11th February 1874 at Mesanger near Nantes in France and was baptized on 12th February 1874.  He was a Montifortian Missionary.

 

Bishop Louis Auneau was ordained as a Priest on 15th July 1900 in Vannes, France.

THE BIRTH OF A CONGREGATION

When Father Louis Auneau was consecrated Bishop, he chose to reside at Nguludi. Bishop Louis Auneau received a letter of approval from the Holy See in Rome on 24th January 1925.  This Congregation started exactly on 15th August 1926.

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS – THE PIONEERS OF THE CONGREGATION

Sr. Martha Bwanausi was coming from Mpiri in the area of what is now Mangochi in the year 1920.

Sr. Amarta Amabilisi Kalonda was from Nzama Parish in Ntcheu District, walked down to Nguludi and was accompanied by her father.  She explained that the journey from Ntcheu to Nguludi was terrible especially at night.

THE APOSTOLIC WORK OF THE SBVM SISTERS

EDUCATION

Bishop Louis Auneau in the SBVM Constitution stressed some important sectors.  These are education and service to the underprivileged, especially widows and orphans.  He encouraged sisters, who would be sent  to school, to work harder in order to overcome the challenges which they meet when working with people from different walks of life.

TEACHING

The Congregation has many sisters who teach at various levels of education.

HEALTH

Many SBVM Sisters work in different department and levels of the health sector.  These spread in health centers and hospitals across the country.  Taking care of the sick is a mission entrusted to them by the Founder of the Congregation.
